Bacon triptych
07 May 14
Just received a beautiful and lavish catalogue from Christie's New York for the sale of Francis Bacon's triptych 'Three Studies for a Portrait of John Edwards' (1984) which is coming up at auction on 13th May. They used quite a few of my photos for the catalogue including this one of Francis Bacon's kitchen at 7 Reece Mews. Two panels of the triptych can be seen in the top left corner of this photo.

Peter Doig

Interesting to see this show of early Peter Doig works at the Michael Werner Gallery in London. Mainly from the early/mid-Eighties, they appear to have come from Peter Doig's own archive. Plenty of American influences and cartoon characters. And a strong sense of colour - and sometimes unusual colour combinations. Plus, plenty of humour. This is the odd image out as it's almost the only drawing (most of the works are paintings) and certainly the only one on lined paper torn from a notebook, but it shows a sense of fun: Patient: Peter Doig; Ailment: severe baldness (hair loss); (cause: excess drinking); mental state: uneasy.
Peter Doig 2

Titled 'At the Edge of Town' this is the image from the exhibition that most conveys what is to come. Looking back - it was painted in 1986 - this is where we can say that Peter Doig is finding a focus, finding his feet.
John Deakin and the lure of Soho

I always love looking at John Deakin prints. Wonderful black and white portraits. Seems that what he really wanted was to be taken seriously as a painter - but he never was. Of course, now when his paintings come up for auction they are much sought after. Well worth seeing this show at the Photographers Gallery in London. There's even a painting of Francis Bacon by Deakin.
A picture of me!

Walked into BDI this morning to find this print waiting for me. It's a photo Chris Moyse took of me in my Rosebery Avenue studio back in the mid-Eighties - or thereabouts! Brought back some great memories. Many thanks Chris!
Matisse at Tate Modern

Great to see the wonderful Matisee cut-outs show at the Tate Modern. Well worth having a look at the short piece of film showing Matisse with a large pair of scissors cutting a line. The precision of his cutting is remarkable. The colours, of course, are amazing.
